Who would ever want to be the King?

Viva La Vida

"Viva La Vida" by Coldplay is one of my favorite childhood songs. It's lyrics talk about a imaginary speech of King Louis XIV to his people before he was beheaded. King Louis XIV and his wife Queen Marie Antoinette were guillotined during the reign of terror admidst the French Revolution. When King Louis XIV gave his last words, minutes before his death, the drums beat louder, no one heard what he said, his speech was lost to history as the French public were furious on him and refused to listen to him. After he was beheaded, people dipped their handkerchiefs in his blood as a souvenir. The King who had it all, died a shameful death without any glory.

Lyrics of "Viva La Vida" (meaning - long live life)-

"I used to rule the world

Seas would rise when I gave the word

Now in the morning, I sleep alone

Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice

Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes

Listen as the crowd would sing

Now the old king is dead, long live the king

One minute, I held the key

Next the walls were closed on me

And I discovered that my castles stand

Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringin'

Roman Cavalry choirs are singin'

Be my mirror, my sword and shield

My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason, I can't explain

Once you'd gone, there was never, never an honest word

And that was when I ruled the world

It was a wicked and wild wind

Blew down the doors to let me in

Shattered windows and the sound of drums

People couldn't believe what I'd become

Revolutionaries wait

For my head on a silver plate

Just a puppet on a lonely string

Oh, who would ever want to be king?"

To think that the ideas of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity emerged in some way through this unfit King Louis XIV is amusing to me. The French Revolution was a movement of the poor against the powerful.  Such pain, suffering and anger of the people of France is the reason why we have "Justice, Liberty and Equality" in our preamble and those as our fundamental rights. History is tragedy. And history repeats itself. Today's leaders should learn from history, how people's wrath is unforgiving.
